We are thrilled that word has spread about BellaVelo, and enquiries about joining the club keep rolling in. However, due to this success and expansion we have taken the decision to formalise our joining procedure in order to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all our riders.
From January 2020 we ask that everyone who is interested in riding with BellaVelo attends one of our monthly New Joiner Rides in Richmond Park, regardless of whether or not you are a seasoned road rider.
This is so that we can get to know you, explain how BellaVelo ride as a club and give you chance to practice group riding skills and etiquette. It’s important to be familiar with calls and signals, and to be comfortable riding close together before you head out on a group ride of any speed.
The New Joiner Rides are held on the second Sunday every month from 9am to 11am. You can sign up on TeamApp. For info on TeamApp click here.
The first hour covers group riding skills: riding in close formation, riding two abreast, riding single-handed (essential for taking on drinks or snacks, and signalling), pointing out obstacles and passing verbal messages up and down the line.
The second hour is an opportunity to put these skills to the test in a ride out of the park towards Kingston and Teddington, ending back at Richmond Park.
The intention of this session is not to ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ you as a club rider, but to ensure that you as a rider feel confident joining a club ride, and that we as a club feel confident that you will be safe on the roads. We can also signpost you towards the most appropriate group for your speed.
Once you have completed the New Rider session you will have access to all the rides posted on TeamApp.
There may be the odd occasion when we meet a new joiner and understand they already exceed our requirements for joining a group ride. This might be that they are British Cycling ride leader qualified or have ridden extensively in a professional team, or have extensive group riding experience. If you feel this might be you, please contact bellavelo@gmail.com with details of your riding experience. We cannot guarantee that this will exempt you from attending the session, but your application will be considered by the committee.
All ride details can be found on our calendar and on the TeamApp. All rides are free but we do ask you to sign up in advance via TeamApp. This helps with organising ride leaders and so we know how many to expect. Any general questions please post in the club Facebook group or contact us at bellavelocc@gmail.com We also ask that once you have cycled with us three times we ask you to become a member and support the club.
