We are absolutely stoked to announce that British Cycling has been paying attention to what BellaVelo has been doing for women’s cycling, the speed of our growth and size of our membership. They want to partner with us and, going forward, will be subsidizing all our ride leader training which will allow us to run a more extensive, more structured club ride programme in 2019. They have offered a discount of over 50% for their Level 1 & 2 Ride Leader qualification specifically for Bellavelo. This is where you come in!

By mid-December we hope to have identified twenty BellaVelos to train as Ride Leaders in early 2019, with ten more doing the qualification later in the year.  You will obtain the BC combined Level 1 & 2 Ride Leader award on a 2 day course and, added to this, throughout January we will supplement this by running our own Saturday morning sessions exclusively for our new leaders which will cover:
  • Pacing rolling and flat rides. Hot Chillee will be helping with this as well as with the etiquette of controlling a group and back marking.
  • Practical skills and ‘house-keeping’ covering actual puncture practice, accident and incident reporting as well as using the new app which we will be launching shortly. We want to ensure that all leaders understand BV etiquette so all riders know what to expect when they attend one of our club rides. This session, which will be park based, will make sure all new leaders have a chance to practise group skills out in the park
  • Riding one of our club routes again putting group riding theory into practise
  • The British Cycling course – which will be on one of the weekends – probably towards the end of Jan is a two day commitment and will be both days of the same weekend.
We are waiting for confirmation of a date from BC. So we are now looking for twenty of you who want to train to be a BellaVelo ride leader. You don’t have to be a fast, you just need good, solid riding experience, a positive, friendly and encouraging manner and you should be a BellaVelo club member or intend to become one in the New Year. Additionally you should own a Garmin, Wahoo or other mapping device! You need to be available on 4 Saturday mornings from early Jan to mid Feb and for a full weekend for the BC course.

Please contact us by Friday 14th December to find out more including the costs (£85), the obligations (to lead 8 rides a year but these can include park laps and intervals) and the benefits (you get paid £5 for each of the 8 rides or sessions you lead at year end). We will then send you full details explaining what is involved. We look forward to hearing from you.
